FAQ
What is included with the “base price” of the gate?
You get the finished gate, which is sanded and ready for stain and installation. You also get the gate jambs (2) and the gate stops (2) where needed.

What DON’T I get with the “base price?”
What’s not included is the hardware (hinges, knobs, latches, etc.) stain or paint, installation and delivery. Also, the base price covers the basic infill, but does not include custom infill, speakeasies or other options.

What is the “basic infill?”
The best way to describe it is that the bottom and top of the gate are filled with the same 1 by 6 lumber rather than a more decorative infill such as metal, fancy joinery, etc. This style of gate is often called a “privacy gate” because you can’t see through it.

How do I determine the measurements for the gate?
We’ve developed a handy form to complete to help you get the correct measurements. Please and we’ll send you the form.

Can I mix gate styles on my property?
Sure. In some cases it’s the perfect choice. Think of your home’s interior. It is doubtful that all the rooms have the exact same style. And your yard space may be designed in the same manner. For instance, you may want a small, friendly garden gate for your front walk that is welcoming; while at the same time want a full size solid gate for the backyard that gives privacy and security. Many of our customers pick a showy gate for out front while choosing a more utilitarian style for the back and sides.

Once paint or stain is applied, will I have to re-do it over the years?
Yes. Just like your house and car, gates will age outdoors. This means that paint and stain will have to be re-applied periodically to remain looking fresh. How often is hard to determine. Climate, amount of sun, heat and moisture all play a part in this.

I like the look of natural wood. Do I have to stain or paint the gates?
No. While paint and stain protect the wood, without them both redwood and cedar set up something of a surface patina that protects the wood beneath it. They will turn a silver/grey color and over time may develop some imperfections. Some people love this look, others don’t. It's just a matter of personal taste.

Why do you use redwood and cedar to make the gates?
Because they are two of the best choices for outdoor woodwork, especially gates. These woods are lightweight, strong and beautiful. They are also highly resistant to bugs and rot, and season well outdoors with minimal care.

Can I order one of your gates made out of a different wood?
Yes. Other woods such as ipe or teak are available. There are some style and design considerations with these woods. Please call to discuss the details.

I like one of your gates, but I’d like to add some of my own personal touches. Can I do this?
Of course. We live for this. Making a gate personal to you and your home, and having a proud and satisfied customer is what we are all about.

I recently saw a gate I really like, but you don’t have that style on your website. Could you build it for me?
Yes, please! We love a challenge! If you can provide a picture or sketch, and we can engineer it (which means just make it work properly) then we would be happy to do the work. Who knows, you may be featured in our “Gate of the Month” section (coming soon).

I’d like to have a double door gate. Do you build in that style?
Sure. While we generally recommend a single gate for widths 4 feet and less due to ease of operation and cost considerations, we also can build double gates in any of our styles.

I really need a new gate, but I also need new fencing and I’m thinking about a deck. I want it all to match. Do you build other things besides gates?
Yes. RichCo Gates is part of RichCo Outdoor Construction. We build fences, decks, pergolas, stairs, arbors, porch covers, benches, doors, and just about anything made of wood for the outdoor environment. Please visit contact us for more information.
